There is no such thing as an ugly color….But, there is such a thing as mixing the wrong colors together, thereby creating an “ugly” color palette. There is a science to creating a color palette and the process can seem overwhelming. So, we have decided to offer some tips and tricks to help alleviate the process.
TIPS:
#1: Timeless Over Trendy
It is inevitable that you will have to update your brand throughout the years; however, if you choose timeless over trendy colors, this will never have to be updated. When updating your brand, you will not want to deviate from your colors because this could potentially make your brand unrecognizable to your loyal constituents. Timeless colors will allow for brand recognition during times of change.
#2: Stay Relevant To Your Brand
It is important to choose colors that are relevant to your business, including your values, your mission, and your industry. Colors should be a reflection of your brand. If you own a Farm & Ranch Real Estate company, you probably shouldn’t pick any pinks or purples; it would be better to stick to more natural, earthy tones. Relevance is of the utmost importance when it comes to choosing a color palette.
#3: Keep You In Mind
This is your brand, and your brand is a direct reflection of yourself. Choose something that you love and can also live with for the entirety of your brand’s existence.
FORMULA
As we said, there is a science to creating a color palette, and this involves a formula. We recommend that your color palette should be around 5 colors. This will allow you to maintain consistency and brand recognition while also having plenty of options for any situation.
Two Main Colors
The two main colors should include a bold color and a color that compliments it. This will allow for brand recognition. The bold color should be chosen first, because it is the color that represents your brand’s mission and will be used in almost everything you do. The complementary color should contrast the bold color. A color wheel can be useful in determining the best complementary color for your bold color.
Two - Three Neutral Colors
The first neutral should be an accent neutral. An accent neutral should compliment both the bold color and the complementary color. This will help create a separation between your bold and complementary colors. The other neutral colors should include a dark neutral and a light neutral. The dark neutral will be mainly used for text and the light neutral will be mainly used for backgrounds and supporting elements.
